Job #39

Okay! That's it!! The record is off to press. Chris at SIRE PRESS says it'll be a 10-day turn-around. I will be sending some copies to Hollywood, Philly, and Korea. If you would like some press copies to review on your blogs, zines, or simply to have for your own enjoyment, let me know at piroozkalayeh@gmail.com.

What else?

Well, I am flirting with the possibility of a new job in Korea, or to head back to L.A. to join UCLA's Animation Program. I don't know if I'll get in, but I figure I'll give it a try. I'd like to make some cartoons for a couple years (job #39).

I talked over the possibility with my folks and friends. Most seem to be supportive of the venture. I'm just not sure how good of an illustrator I am for the job. I guess UCLA can decide if I got the right stuff, as they only accept 20 candidates per year. I'm guessing they might like me. I do have a killer smile.

Aside from that, I have now taken to wearing pinstripe suits everyday. I am so gangster, but without the misogyny, drugs, or purple hankies. I wouldn't mind bringing the hankie into play though. It might start a trend in Korea - a land known to follow the latest fad until it trails out to remote villages, and the purple hankie dies slowly and quietly in a mountain valley in Pusan.

As of now, there is no hankie. I do have the killer smile though. I am wearing it now. I've got this order of Mexian chicken coming through the door, and my application to Stanford to fill out - all in a typical day of a writer trying to find a way to keep writing.

I don't know how many other people feel this way, but I'm constantly looking for that extra moment. It can be hard when your working your way towards making a living, and trying to write a sestina at the same time. At least for me it is. I like not working at all when I write.

Either way, I am hitting lots of competitions and possible fellowships. If I egt UCLA and a fellowship, I will do both. If I get nothing, I will still write. I will write my way into a fellowship. It'll be a story. It will start with a girl. Her parents say she can't date no megook (American). They want her home by midnight - not in the arms of some gangster. I try to tell them that the purple hankie is just for show, but they can't believe I started the trend. Neither can the fellowship program. They say I'm a little too dinosaur to roll with Fred Flinstone. Maybe, if I looked more like Dino. I am a badass T-Rex though. I sing Eminem's "Lose Yourself" with 20 Korean girls. I stomp my feet. I shout it out: "You got to lose yourself to the music, the moment, you own it, don't never ever let it go!!"

Now there is a girl on my iChat. She's got a killer smile too. I'll catch you on the flip.

The Slipshod Swingers and Korean Cuisine

I'm having fun rehearsing with a new lineup of The Slipshod Swingers here in Seoul. We have been practicing a few times a week, and although we only have a percussionist and one incredibly smoking, hot singer thus far, I have no doubt some additional members and a dozen songs will show themselves before our record release party in September.

Last week, we worked on a fun ditty, entitled, Korean Cuisine. Sarah Glinski wrote the lyrics in like 10 seconds. I was like, "That is cool. Write more." Then she did. It was only a jam and a lot of laughing later, before we had the cutest song I've ever seen. Read and listen for yo'self:

Korean Cuisine

Pickled veggies
On a plate
Gives me gas
That I hate.

Baby octopi
Small and wriggly
Dances down
My throat so joggly.

Noodles, noodles
Slurp them up
Eat them quick
From a cup.

Soju is
A nasty drink
Makes you drunk
Makes you stink...

The chorus** needs better lyrics to match the verses, but, all in all, I'd say we're off to a good start. If you want to catch the rest of these fantabulous lyrics or hear a rough version of the song, click the yummy strawberry below.

Transistor Radio

I woke up this morning with this song in my head. I figured I might as well learn how to use GarageBand and record it. Here is an early version. I'll add guitars and figure out the equalizer later. In the meantime, here's Transistor Radio, a shout out to "White Lines," 2 Live Crew, and the West Coast of Mars.

(Can anyone guess who's singing with me?)

The Slipshod Swingers

The new record is out! Orange Lamborghini!!

I will be selling through Lulu, my house, and then some digital warehouse. It's pretty exciting. One of my favorite records that I have been a part of. Thank you to all the Swingers!! And now, without further adieu, lets hear from a few.

Up first, the engineer, my little brother, the mastermind with buttons and beats, Panauh Kalayeh...

Me: Alright, little dude, you're 19 years old. You've got a gig at Track Record, one of
the hottest recording studios in Los Angeles. Now you're starting your
own record label. How do you do it?

Panauh
: I really just try to take things slow (even though i don't), and
sometimes I feel opportunities just fall on my lap. It may have to do
with the way i present myself...I try to learn as much as I can from
older people that have been in the business.

I don't want to say I'm opening up the record label for sure yet but
I'm hoping...Then again I'm not relying on this as my only option,
this is why I take it for what it is and if it happens cool if not I'm
still going to be working with music because I couldn't picture myself
doing anything else. I thank God everyday for the blessings he has
given me. I am grateful to be working with such talented artists.

Me: Well, said. How about you, JP? What's one of your favorite songs off this record?

JP: Bootylicious is the jam. When the guitar strummin' kicks in and everyone's going, "Bootylicious..." I get warm fuzzies. And you can't beat the yells at the end of the "Twist and Shout" like outro to each chorus. Is that called a bridge? I have no freaking clue. That's why we're called Slipshod, I guess.

Me: Timmery, what has been your favorite jam session with Slipshod?

Timmery: My ultimate favorite Slipshod session was the one when your awesome writer friend and Frank were in town, and I did no singing but I got billigerently and wildly drunk. Goodtimes.

To Be Continued...

The Slipshod Swingers: Baghdad Hysteria

Baghdad Hysteria is a reality song about video game suburbia and Baghdad under fire. It has the lyrical stylings of The Kalayeh brothers and the guitar work of Bret Agins.
_______________

"The History of a Song"

My brother didn't think I could rap. He was very doubtful.

"You're not hip hop," he said.

"You're right. I'm Pirooz. Start the track."

Some people don't realize we're diamonds. We can do anything. We can rap, get PhD's, become doctors, breakdance - shit, it's whatever you want to do.

"Just go after it."

Panauh listened to the track. He started laughing uncontrolably.

"What's wrong?" I asked.

"Nothing," he laughed, louder.

"What?"

"Nothing," he smiled. "It's just - you're good."

I love it when people's ideas suddenly change in the face of reality. There is nothing more precious.

"Damn, right," I egotized. "Now get your ass on the second verse."

"Me?"

"You rap don't you?"

"Me?"

"Lets break down the walls, yo."

"Alright."

I put my headphones on. Panauh got up to the mike.

"From Hollywood to Baghdad. Hit it!" I shouted.

Panauh laughed again.

The walls fell with him.

The Slipshod Swingers: Hollywood Boulevard

Orange Lamborghini is moving right along. Here is the final version of Hollywood Boulevard, one of my favorite songs from The Slipshod Swingers. There are so many people singing on this track. At first, I was against it. Then I realized it was the only way it could be. It was an anthem. It was Hollywood. It was home.

Timmery - Backing Vocal
Belinda - Backing Vocal
Panauh - Engineer and Backing Vocal

Now for a question:

Which cover for the album do you like better? Top or bottom?

Orange Lamborghini is moving right along. Here is Coyote, the newest song from The Slipshod Swingers. Panauh did the music. I sang like a coyote.

Shikow News: Slipshod, Hollywood, Gorgeous Armenian, PInchie, Timeray, and an All Round Night of Magic

____________________________________
Slipshod went great. It was Brett, JP, and myself. We went straight through Hollywood Boulevard and this new tune Bob Marley. Very cool song. I will post it if Panauh gets his ass together and sends it to me. (Now that he does the recording in the other room, he's got to make everything perfect, you know?)

But why am I listening to Jack Johnson early in the morning on a Saturday?

Well, as Slipshod rocked Little Armenia (meaning 1807 Taft Avenue, Apt 1), I could hear applause. Our neighbors were cheering. Next thing I know I'm out having a smoke, and this chick comes up and introduces herself. She says she was just listening and wanted to come over and introduce herself.

"You know like in college you'd just go over to the dorm room. I know it might seem weird, but I figured you were people on the same wavelength, you know?"

"Yeah," I say.

She's pretty. Persian is my guess.

"You speak Farsi?" I ask.

"Yeah," she smiles.

I say hello in my native tongue. She gets cute, bats her eyelashes, and replies. It is evident her heart is curious about me. I'm way too strong for most ladies though. I'm like a heart attack. That heavy. I prove it too.

"You sing?" I ask her.

"That's what they asked me inside," she shifts all nervous and shit. "Why you guys looking for a singer?"

"Slipshod is always welcome to other musicians," I say.

"I only sing in the shower."

"Well, come sing on this track."

"Right now?"

"Yeah," I say.

"Well," she pulls at the bottom of her shirt, "maybe if I was prepared."

"What do you do?"

"I'm a head hunter for audio engineers. I find them jobs."

"Good for my brother," I think and say (because these days it just drools out of my mouth).

"Yeah," she agrees.

"There's something else though. You're a headhunter. I hear that. But there's some kind of art there."

"Yeah," she says. "Well, I did the whole acting modeling thing, but I got tired of it. I also danced."

"Jazz hands," I demonstrate.

"Yeah, jazz hands," she returns the favor.

"Well, what are you up to tonight? Lets go out."

"We're going to King King's. Have you heard of it?"

"Nah."

"It's really cool. Drum and bass. They have a DJ. One of our friends is performing there tonight. You guys should come. We could meet you there."

"Mmmm," I say. "Well, when are you going there?"

"As soon as I'm done getting ready. I'm a little tired right now. I might have to drink a Red Bull though. Then I'll head out."

She laughs. Gorgeous laugh.

"Well, come get us when you go," I say.

"Oh, well," she frowns. "We're going with a bunch of Armenians. We have to meet at this one person's house and then we're going to have to wait so-"

"I hear you. It's too hard."

"Yeah," she thinks and says. "You could meet us there."

"I don't know. Maybe, you can come over and jam tomorrow."

This is where I can't write anymore. It's too hard. She kind of just leaves, and I didn't want her too. Maybe, she had a boyfriend or something. I don't know. JP was quick to razz me on it though.

"Dude, you blew it."

"I came off too strong?" I ask B.

"Yeah, well, a little," B says.

"Why didn't you tell me I was coming off that strong?"

"Oh," B smiles. "We need signs already."

"Yeah," I say.

"Hey, Pirooz," B rubs his head. "That's a strong breeze."

We laugh.

"Man," JP smiles. "When I saw that girl I was like, 'That's Pirooz's future wife."

"I blew it though."

"Nah, Hollywood girls just have this vaneer you got to polish off."

"Well, are you going to come be my wingman?"

"I'm tired, man."

"I hear you," I say. "Go do what you got to do."

"What are you going to do?" B asks.

"I don't know," I say. "I'm feeling kind of lonely. I might go to this King King's thing. I don't know. Might be a little creepy though, if I show up."

"Yeah," B agrees.

The boys take off. I'm still feeling kind of lonely, so I decide to call up Timeray and hit King King's with her. She'll be my wingman.

"Where are you?" the cell phone chirps.

"I'm heading up Hollywood," I tell her. "Meet me at King King's."

"Okay," she says. "I'm performing right now. I'll call you when I'm done."

I walk up about 5 blocks. I see a massive traffic jam. A girl is eyeing me. She waves. I smile. Wave. It stirs something in her. She starts screaming. That's when Tim calls back.

"I'm almost to Gower," she says.

"Okay," I shout over the girl screaming at me.

"What's going on? T asks.

"Some girl's yelling at me!" I shout into the phone.

"What's she saying?"

"I don't know. Something about-"

"Hey, man," a guy says walking beside me. "That girl says she's a slut and wants you stick it in her butt."

"Really?" I turn around.

"What'd she say?" Timeray asks. "Who is that?"

"Just some guy on the street."

I hand the guy the phone.

"Here," I say. "Tell T what she said."

"She says you're a slut and she wants to stick it in your butt-"

"You're?" I interrupt.

"I mean 'she.' She's a slut and wants him to stick it in her butt."

I take back the phone.

"Oh, my," T says.

"Funny, huh?"

"Yeah," she agrees. "Well, I'll see you in a little bit."

I hang up the phone and chat with my newfound interpreter. His name is Pinch. He is from Australia. At least, originally. Now he lives on Gower. He is into Industrial soul. He loves the Nails.

"Nails?" I ask.

"Nine Inch Nails," he says.

I invite Pinchie to come with us. I figure there's nothing better than a gang of 3 on Hollywood.

"Come to King King's," I say.

"Okay," he says. "What's there?"

"A hot girl," I tell him.

Pinchie and I walk for a while, trying to find the place. In the meantime, we drop the knowledge about ourselves. It's clear our meeting was no accident - no matter how new age that might sound.

"Yeah," he smiles. "I figured something like this was going to happen, when I headed out."

We finally get to King King's and the place is packed. There's a line around the block.

"It's an illusion," Pinchie says. "They're just holding people out to make it look like it's packed."

"Mmmm," I say.

Tim walks up about this time with some burly guy. She says he was kind enough to escort her.

"Thanks," I tell the big guy, and give him a hug.

"No problem," he says in a thick accent. "It is my pleasure."

I introduce Pinchie to Timeray. Then we decide about the situation. (Big guy jettisons, of course).

"Lets go to Starshoes and dance," Pinchie drops.

"Mmmm," I think and say. "But the hot girl was going to be here."

They look at me like kids who want to go to McDonald's, and I've learned long ago not to argue with reality.

"Okay," I say. "Lets go."

"Alright," Pinchie says. "Going with the flow. I love it."

We walk aimlessly for a bit. Pinchie drops some of his spoken word. Timeray sings her latest piece. I listen and harmonize on certain parts, until we hit some bar on Cahuenga.

We drop in fast. I tell them that drinks are on me, because they are poor and I'm not, so that's how we'll roll tonight.

They don't argue.

I order 3 rum and cokes. A girl comes up to me right away. She shows me her crap, handmade tattoo. I show her the new one I got last Saturday. She thinks it's fake.

"No, it's not," I say.

That's all I say to her. I probably should have stopped there. I didn't though. After we hit the dance floor, I caught her watching us break it down in the packed club.

"Come," I say. "Dance with us."

"I have two drinks," she says, and hold up her hands.

"I'll hold one," I say. "Pinchie will hold the other.

She grinds up on me for a bit. I sing in her ear. Don't think she liked that. She took off in a hurry.

"Did that girl diss me?" I ask Pinch.

"Dude," he smiles. "There are hundreds.

I like Pinchie, I spin. He's right.

We proceed to hit several more clubs on Hollywood. Tim and Pinch are star dancers. Pinchie taught hip-hop dance, so he tears it up wherever we go. So does Timeray. I dance okay. It's more like an inspiration for others to dance. I got rhythm. I can groove with it. But I'm so manly, you know? I've got that vibe that on a dance floor comes off as a sheik in the desert, while onstage people would be like, "Who is he?" I roll with it though, you know?

Anyway, we are on our last club, when Pinchie tells me that he wants to talk to the owner.

"Dude," he says. "I want to talk to the owner. This place should be packed."

"Okay," I say. "You find the guy. I'll be your partner. Let go do it."

Pinch asks a couple of the bouncers who to talk to. I go and talk to a girl. She points out the owner, and then the 3 of us roll up to him. Pinchie does the sale. He fronts about how many bottles he could get the place to sell. Timeray mentions her showcase and sways ever so gently in front of him. I stand there and look menacing. (I know my role).

He is swayed. He gives Timeray his card.

"Good," I say to the group. "Lets get this place packed next Thurday."

"Next Thursday?" Pinchie says

"Okay," I say. "The Thursday after that.

We walk back down Hollywood Boulevard. We talk about many things. We sing songs to each other. We hit Tommy's for burgers. We say goodbye.

Now it's morning. I listen to Jack Johnson. I think about how I can get that Armenian girl next door to come over.

Maybe, I'll just sing love songs all day. She'll hear them and come say hello again.

(If she comes over, she won't ever want to leave)

Maybe. Who knows?

I'll keep ya'll posted.

Shikow News. Over and out.

Slipshod Stirs Music: hollywood B

Yeah, so this song isn't done and Slipshod will do another version on Friday. I am in love with it though. It's so dirty and sexy.

Here are a couple lines:

I got my Fendi bag motherfucker don't you know I look good! I got my Pontiac Trans Am don't you know I look good on Hollywood Boulevard...on Hollywood Boulevard...

We also have the new line-up complete. I will be playing rhythm guitar, John Lennon styley. Brett will play textural lead. Petey Pete will play bass and guitar. John Posatko will play djembe. And we have so many great singers: Timeray, Belinda, Ashleigh, and Catherine. I am so thankful to have this new line-up for the MARS record. It is going to be a great one. And if you haven't heard the first song, RTD, then go to the previous post.

In the meantime, here is the rough shot of Hollywood Boulevard. Raw and on the 7th take. (The Swingers started grumbling when I took it to 10 and kept stopping, because Belinda's gorgeous voice kept making me forget who the hell I was.)

New Version Without Distortion on Any Tracks

Just to let people know. I have put a new version of The Slipshod album up.

I Heart Slipshod: The Interview and Music Video

Okay, here we go. The record will be out on Feb 14th. This is a little teaser music video. Consider it a "making of" documentary.

I still need to come up with a title for the record. I am thinking to rip off I heart Huckabees, and just call it I Y Slipshod Swingers. Yes, that is exactly what I have just done.

Click photo to watch video or here.

______________________________

Interview with Pirooz Kalayeh on I Y Sliplshod Swingers: The Love Record.*

What will be on the record?

It will be 14 love songs. Some have been streamed on Shikow and Myspace. Some haven't.

Why love songs? Isn't that a taboo place to go musically? Why go Richard Marx on us?

First of all, I love Richard Marx. I got to slow dance the girl of my dreams, because I'll Be Right Here Waiting for You was rocking the middle school cafeteria. And second, I am drawn to love songs. They are my favorite stories, and I wasn't inspired to write about anything else. I love the push and pull of it, the not knowing. It's what I go through everyday. It's about me, really. Love is. And that's what makes the story so universal. Everyone loves a good story, and I don't know any story that doesn't have to do with love. Not for me, at least.

Now the songs on this record were not done track to track. Why not? Were you trying to make a particular sound? A feel?

Well, part of the beauty of things is limitations. I love trying to create with what I have available. When I started this record, it was just me and my brother and one microphone. By the time the record was done, it had gone from just me to a gang of 7 and better recording equipment. It was natural to keep the rawer made tracks together, and the more streamlined gems on the other. I also liked the challenge of making a live record sound like it wasn't live or that it was. That was a cool place to play, and it definitely made me step up on my abilities as a songwriter, since most songs were done on the spot.

On the spot?

We had
one microphone. That meant doing a great performance or not. In most cases, we did well. Sometimes we rehearsed certain songs. Other times we wrote them right on the spot, or I had a chorus written and then we would start with that, and make up the rest.

Do you like working like that? Was it hard?

Not for me. I enjoy it. It's like theater.

Will there be another record?

I am sure there will be many records from The Slipshod Swingers.

How long do we have to wait for the next one?

Well, the Love Record will be out on Feb 14th. And the next one, will be out pretty soon. That's going to be an interesting record. Currently, we are playing with tracks in Italian and strange techno type beats reminiscent of space rock. I have no idea what the finished concept will be. There is some talk of a detective story, like Bowie's Outsider back in '95. Except our protaganist is not a serial killer. He is an man in Venice looking for his missing wife.

Sounds interesting. Is that what the track playing with the latest video is about?

Yeah, that's a special bonus for fans. It's a great track. We had Franky Ewing on guitar, myself on Bass, and John Posatko on Djembe. Panauh Kalayeh engineered the piece. He will be doing most of the record. So, yeah, that will be coming out by March 21st.

Now everybody's talking about how you're doing music, but no writing? What about books? When's the next comic book?

I don't know. I am still drawing comics, when I can squeeze it in. Right now I am looking for a theme that will excite me. As far as fiction, The Whopper Strategies is still coming out for eight more issues in Ellipses Magazine, and then I have to spend the next month coming up with a publisher. Hopefully, this will resolve itself, with a publisher calling me. I have no idea.

What about publishing it yourself?

I have thought about it. That may be the case. I would rather have strong distribution and a nice marketing team behind the novel. There are three in the series, and I don't want to rush into anything. I spent a while writing those novels, and they mean a lot to me, but then again, who knows? If push comes to shove and I have to create a marketing platform on my own, and get some books pressed, I am not going to think twice about it. Lets just say the decision will make itself when I am ready to make it.

What do you like about this record?

I like that it's reality music; the equivalent of reality tv. I also like that it feels like reading a book. I don't get that off of records too much, but when I finish listening to this one, it's like something's changing. I am guessing this must be because the album was recorded over so much time, with so many different Swingers, and that we did it live and improv. It is kind of subject to Los Angeles that way. This city is constantly changing. One day you are working a job, and the next your sitting on your ass wondering what to do with all your free time.

I hear you on that. Hollywood does seem to have that feel.

Yeah, that's what I like about this city. The weather stays the same, but everyday is different. And when you walk down the street or head up the 101, you get to hear it buzzing your eyes like crazy. It's all that dreaming. Everyone! Everyone is just dreaming of something, and you know that from the moment you get coffee from a barrista or even talk to a homeless guy on the corner. Everyone has a dream in this town, and not a single person has stopped living it. I love that.

So does that mean you're an L.A. Boy now?

Oh, well, that's what some friends say. I know some people would rather see me in a different story, but this one agrees with my personality. It works like me. It's the only place where I can have an idea, and see it come to fruition with such a great turnaround. I think that's a testament to the incredible community I have around me, the fact that everyone is so versatile and willing to explore, and that, oh, I don't know. It's good. [laughs] Yes, I am an L.A. Boy for now.

The Slipshod Swingers: Running

------------------------
This song is absolute bliss for me. I can't stop listening to it.

I can't wait to get this one in the studio.

I also can't wait to play a set. I know it has been a long time since I played one, but I want to. I hear a beat to fill the bliss. I hear a beat to take me home. I hear this thought and it's gone.

No Me Molesta

Lyrics by Catherine and J.P.

She walks like a supermodel
Talks like a role model
All the guys want her
Even Jerry next door...

Don't let it get you down
Take off that funny frown
She might see you tomorrow
And keep on walking

So don't forget to talk
When she answers your knock
And don't forget your cup
She kicks and screams...

No me molesta
Tus pantolones son sucios
El coche rojo viaja rapido...

Dream Don't Make Me
/ Mars or Bust, the Soundtrack (Febraury 14th Release).

Jose and I haven't ever played music together. He, in fact, told me he couldn't do anything. That made me want to make him a new member of Slipshod right away. As you will see, he has a beautiful voice. He makes a wonderful addition.

Welcome, Jose.

This song goes out to Jimbo. You were the one who needed more.

Now tongue lightly, but it’s still legato, it’s still connected, still melodic. Ready? 1—2—
